Get involved in Move Mates our walking buddy scheme
Our Move Mates project started in November and has been funded by the Ways to Wellbeing small grants fund. Move Mates is a walking buddy service which helps to give people the confidence they need to step out of their houses and get active by walking.
Egg Cameron, Founder of Move the Masses said, “Walking is a fantastic, free exercise and a simple way to get more active, but we know there are so many people out there facing barriers. People who might be suffering from anxiety and struggle to leave the house or isolated people who worry that they might fall if they go out on their own.”
Walking has a huge range of health benefits such as:
- increasing cardiovascular fitness whilst reducing the risk of heart disease and strokes
- improving the management of health conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol and joint pain
- improving balance and coordination
- reducing stress and helping with mental wellbeing
When volunteers or people wanting to use the service get in touch, it’s our Move Mates Coordinator, Lucy Emmott who they’ll speak to. Lucy said, “My background of recruitment within the healthcare industry combined with a passion for understanding the benefits of being physically active to those who perhaps need it the most was the motivation for my involvement with Move the Masses”.
Our volunteer Move Mates are there to support people whatever they are facing and can offer either a social walk or can help someone get to an appointment or activity too.
Egg said, “if we can facilitate people getting to community events or activities, that’s brilliant. We want people to be involved with and feel connected to their local community – so if walking buddy means someone has the confidence to get out and do something instead of sitting in their house – it’s all worthwhile!”
If you’re interested in volunteering as a Move Mate or you think you would benefit from having a Move Mate, all the info is.
